Recent Netflix documentaries “The Social Dilemma” and “The Great Hack” got me thinking about the dark side of the social media once again. From how I see it, the major issue with social media is the unawareness among the people about what is a happening under the hood. But sometimes the rather unsettling fact is that some of us already know this and we choose to ignore it anyway. So I thought it is my duty as a software engineering undergrad and a tech blogger to make people aware of this.
I think most of you are already aware that any social media tracks your activities. I am quite sure many of you have faced an incident where you have talked about buying something with one of your friends and BOOM! the item is coming up on your Facebook feed!! How cool is that? Well, there are 2 sides to the coin. While this is insanely convenient, don’t you think there’s a possibility that this was a non essential item which you didn’t really want to buy, but the interesting ads kept popping up until you buy that item?
